The Workmen's Circle Colony was established in Pickering, Ontario, Canada in 1926 as a summer destination for members of the organization. The land for the colony was purchased by 23 families, who then each built a summer cottage. The cottages were in use until the 1980's. This collection of cottages was demolished the summer of 2016.
These pictures were taken during the demolition process therefore many of the cottages had already been levelled or were in serious disrepair. Some of the items in these pictures might be considered quite personal. Decisions as to what is taken and what is left behind in these situations never fails to fascinate. These pictures are offered as a final tribute to the purpose this colony served for so many years and those who shared in its building and enjoyment.
These, and additional images, over 80 in total, were donated to the Ontario Jewish Archives in January 2019.
